If you purchase the academic version of Lightroom there will be a code included that you need to submit along with other documentation to verify that you are eligible for the discount. Once the verification has taken place you will receive your serial number via e-mail. You can download the latest version of Lightroom (currently 5.6) and use the serial number that you receive from Adobe to activate it. There is no need to install from the disk or from an earlier version of Lightroom 5. Each update is a complete new program. And all versions of Lightroom 5.x can be activated with that serial number.
