Just a thought, but you can add a layer below the image give it any fill preferably somwhere with in the greyscale, adjust until it looks right then either flatten or save as jpg.  Since jpg's do not support layers, the layers would end up merged.
I recommend that you save a master file keeping the layers separate making it easy to adjust later if it doesn't look right when you come back to the image at a later date. A master file should be saved as a psd or tiff format to support the most features of photoshop.
