How to upgrade files from Director 8 to Director 12

Our program was made using Director 8. We want to publish our work on a web platform. I believe we have to upgrade our files from Director 8 to Director 11.5 or Director 12? Upgrading directly (or jumping direct) will cause problems with lingo scripts from what I have been told. Do we have to upgrade from Director 8  to all these versions step by step to have compatibility?

(8.5, MX, mx2004, Director 11. Director 11.5, Director 11.5.8, Director 11.5.9,  Director 12)

Which version is the best for publishing the work on Web format ?
Can we also publish our work for Apple IPADs?
