I would question you on the part "....the only way".
You should be able to make a USB connection between the camera and the computer, copy the folder from the camera, and paste it on the computer Documents, Videos, etc. From there you can import your files into Premiere Elements with its Add Media/Files and Folders/Project Assets from where you drag the file(s) to the Timeline. Are you saying that you cannot do that...does not work for you? We can go into more details on going this route if all else fails in the Video Importer way.
Looking forward to your follow up. I have not given up on the Video Importer yet.
