Ho do I access the toolbar with the "select function in Acrobat Reader XI?

I want to edit a pdf file in Acrobat Reader XI.  I was instructed to go to the upper left hand corner to click on a "select" button to mark text for deletion, But I cannot find this toolbar with the button on it.
